E3M Conference: UPDATE

We have confirmed the two key note speakers for the E3M Conference: Universities' Third Mission: Indicators and Good Practices. Dr Mike Osborne, Director of CRADALL and Co-director of PASCAL, will provide an overview of the development and issues for Universities Third Mission. The second speech will be given by Professor Jan Sadlak, President of IREG Observatory on educational rankings and measuring methodologies.

Universities’ Third Mission: Indicators and Good Practices

Thursday, 2^nd and Friday, 3^rd February 2012

Venue: Wood Quay Venue, Dublin, IRELAND

In modern knowledge societies, universities play an increasingly important role in achieving economic growth and social progress. Their traditional missions of teaching and research are being broadened to include Third Mission activities that facilitate their engagement with society and industry. While the teaching and research missions of the university are well understood and frequently measured, its Third Mission is yet to be fully examined, and approaches to its measurement developed.

The Conference Universities’ Third Mission: Indicators and Good Practices, which will take place on Thursday, 2^nd and Friday, 3^rd February 2012 at the Wood Quay Venue in Dublin, Ireland, will discuss issues related to measuring the Third Mission, and, as final conference of the E3M Research Project, will provide an opportunity to present a set of indicators developed by the project, and to share good practices in attempts to develop a European-wide measurement framework for Third Mission activities.

The conference, designed as a highly interactive event, is aimed at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), accreditation and ranking agencies, policy makers, institutions working with universities in the areas of technology transfer and innovation, continuing education and social engagement, international organisations and other colleagues working on projects in similar areas and having interest in the development of Third Mission activities.

It is also noted that currently only some US States (e.g. Florida) employment and educational data is linked at the individual level and longitudinally, so that individual trajectories can be mapped while in education and outside education, to measure the employment and learning outcomes of adult education provision. The feasibility of establishing such an approach in Europe would benefit the research potential in this area.

EUA publishes first review of main international university rankings

EUA has published a major new report “Global University Rankings and their Impact” that analyses the methodologies used in the main international university rankings and also refers to a number of other ongoing projects seeking to measure university performance.
